Cleanup at Palmira

For the second time, the pharmaceutical company Boehringer-Ingelheim chose All For Blue to celebrate ‘Value Through Innovation (VTI) Day’. On Thursday, May 11, 2023, our team visited the company’s offices to conduct an educational seminar on the protection of the marine ecosystem. Next, everyone headed to Palmyra beach, Palaio Faliro, for the planned coastal and underwater cleaning.

Katerina Topouzoglou, founder of the organization and Katerina Kyriakopoulou, biologist of our team, spoke to the company’s employees about the human impacts on the marine environment, emphasizing the issue of microplastics and the importance of the circular economy. Participants asked questions about the effects of single-use plastics on the environment and received certificates of attendance.

Then, on the beach, the company’s employees enthusiastically undertook the beach cleanup while the underwater cleanup was carried out by four All For Blue certified divers. A total of 34kg of waste was collected.

Once again, the most common item on the beach was cigarette butts. The team also managed to detach a kite from a tree, whereas the divers collected soft drink packages, plastic bottles and aluminum cans. However, the most bizarre object was an artificial denture, which was removed from the seabed by the divers.

Warm thanks to Boehringer-Ingelheim Hellas for the cooperation as well as the hospitality. We also extend our thanks to the Municipality of Palaio Faliro for the collection of the waste, to the Saronic Port Authority and to Lifeguard Hellas for safeguarding our divers, and last but not least to our volunteers who showed up to this cleanup.
