Sharks are the most misunderstood creatures in the animal kingdom. Mass culture with movies like Jaws destroyed their reputation and they themselves don’t have very good public relations.
We want to change the opinion of people on sharks and restore the truth as soon as possible.
All For Blue seminars aim to raise shark conservation awareness for new generations, changing the wrong impression of this wonderful species.
- There are 506 species of sharks? And that the smallest of them fits in your palm, while the largest one is the whale shark and can reach up to 20m?
- There are 46 species of sharks in the Mediterranean Sea, of which 39 live in Greece? Including tope/ school shark (Galeorhinus galeus)
- Sharks play a critical role in keeping our seas and oceans healthy and in balance. Since they are known as “garbage disposals” which means that they are mainly fed with garbage and sick or weak fish, making them the official “cleaners” of the marine environment.
- In the last decades some species populations (hammerheads) have decreased up to 90 percent, and some others, up to 70 percent due to anthropogenic causes that kill them directly and indirectly. Disinformation and slow reproduction do not help them to improve the recovery rate of these animals.
- Today, sharks face an uncertain future full of risks in a world troubled by environmental problems. If the rate of extinctions increases considerably, in a few years, the seas may be without sharks bringing an enormous amount of environmental consequences with this.
SEMINARS
Shark Awareness – Ocean Conservation
The seminars, organized in cooperation with municipalities, schools, organizations, private institutions and companies, aim to:
– Teach children the importance of protecting our seas and oceans through fun activities.
– Show what is the human impact to the ocean, ways to prevent plastic pollution, introducing reusable products.
– Tell the truth about misunderstood sharks and offer them new knowledge about the magical underwater world.
– Inspire them to take action.
All photos and videos are from our own archive (meaning they’re not indifferent or impersonal) and they’re definitely kid-friendly!
At the end of the seminar, which can be followed by a beach and underwater cleanup, each participant receives an international certificate of participation from Project AWARE and All For Blue.
